Kohima: Hundreds gathered Saturday at the Sepruoliezie Ground in Ward-9, Medziphema Town. They marched to demand justice for a nine-year-old girl recently subjected to a sexual assault. The protest followed a July 17 decision by the Maova Village Council to expel the accused, Paominlun Gangte, son of Lenthang Gangte.
Organized by the Medziphema Town Ward-9 Thenumiapfü Krotho alongside local youth and community leaders, the rally featured sharp warnings for the accused. Ward-9 chairman Abu Medoze labeled the crime inhuman. He warned that if the accused returned to town, the youth would "take its own course of action."
Speakers demanded the state deny bail to Gangte and enforce the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Ward-9 GB Abu-u Kuotsu cited the incident as evidence that Nagaland, once a safe haven, now faces rising threats against women and children. Representatives from the Kuki community, the Gorkha community, and the Medziphema Town Students’ Union also joined the chorus for strict legal consequences.
The Medziphema Town Women Organisation pledged support to the victim. Following the speeches, the Ward-9 Thenumiapfü Krotho submitted a formal memorandum to the Additional Deputy Commissioner. The document calls for a swift, impartial investigation and the harshest possible penalty for the perpetrator. Leaders urged all citizens to stop remaining silent and instead report suspicious activity immediately.
