Guwahati: Alopati Char police arrested Chan Mia in Barpeta town yesterday. He allegedly led a cattle theft network across lower Assam for a long time. Police tracked him down following a specific tip-off. He had been dodging officers for two months.
The arrest followed a Saturday recovery of 11 cattle at Bhatnapaiti. Locals spotted the animals arriving by boat and alerted the village defence party. Officer-in-charge Bidyut Thakuria led the team that seized the livestock. This shipment reportedly traced back to a theft in Hatimura, Guwahati. The original thieves were caught on the spot previously, but Mia slipped away.
Residents claim Mia and an accomplice named Azizul Haque managed the illegal operation together. They allegedly accepted stolen cattle from across the region for resale. Suspicion grew after a buffalo was sacrificed during Eid al-Adha. The second animal was returned to its owner. According to the field report, "The second buffalo was subsequently returned to its owner, according to the field report."
Police are now questioning Mia about his smuggling ties. Locals want Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Barpeta Senior Superintendent of Police to break the network for good.
