Kohima: The Power Department has fitted 1,890 smart meters across the Peren Electrical Division. Executive Engineer Er Tsiamchi confirmed the rollout during an awareness drive held July 15 at the Women Welfare Hall in Jalukie Town. Officials organized the session to clear up confusion regarding the equipment. They want residents to understand how the system works.
Er Tsiamchi explained that smart meters provide precise electricity readings. Users can choose between prepaid or postpaid billing options. The devices remain mandatory for anyone seeking rooftop solar panels through the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. He requested that local leaders and town councillors assist with public outreach to ensure the project runs smoothly. Headquarters has ordered staff to report any villages that refuse to accept the installations.
Extra Assistant Commissioner Sizin Renttah joined the call for community involvement. He told residents not to let myths about the meters stop them. "Smart meters accurately record electricity consumption, offer consumers the option of prepaid or postpaid billing," Er Tsiamchi said. The Ministry of Power project seeks to update distribution systems and boost billing efficiency.
Technicians from ANVIL led a session on the hardware, while A&D Solar representative Miile Puro discussed rooftop solar setup. Puro outlined how on-grid and hybrid systems can cut costs for businesses and government employees. The event ended with a public discussion where locals questioned officials about installation procedures and loan terms for the green energy initiative.
