New rehabilitation center opens in Phek to fight drug addiction

Kohima: Phek Superintendent of Police Dr. Pritpal Kaur launched the Elpis Society for Rehabilitation Centre this Sunday. She called for collective action to strip the district of drugs and intoxicants. This center is her final gift to the area before her upcoming transfer. She hopes it builds a peaceful, progressive community.

The Elpis Society acts as a community-based organization for people fighting alcohol, drug, and substance dependence. The word Elpis means hope for good. The group will handle awareness, prevention, counseling, and rehab support. They want to cut down on the stigma surrounding substance use. Dr. Kaur founded the group to heal addicts and help them rejoin their families.

General secretary Wezote Akami chaired the launch event. Dr. Vezhoto Soho, associate pastor of the PTBC, offered the invocation. Elpis Society president Velato Nienu spoke on the need for local participation. "Elpis" is a Greek word meaning "hope for good," and the society intends to live up to that name. Vice-president Nuvekulu Ezung outlined the mission, while Vamvelu Lohe of Tune Up Academy performed a song. Work and repairs are already underway at the facility. Staff will register the first batch of patients soon.
