Kohima: The Nepali Baptist Church Kohima (NBCK) launched its golden jubilee celebration on July 31 at the church premises in Midland, Kohima. The event follows the theme, "...and forget not all His benefits," taken from Psalm 103:2. The milestone marks half a century of mission work.
Rev. Dr. K. Santabir Rai, executive secretary of the Association of Gorkha Baptist Churches Nagaland, dedicated the golden jubilee monolith. Following the unveiling, he delivered a sermon focused on divine faithfulness. The opening ceremony featured a jubilee procession and a lamp-lighting ritual. Narayan Bahadur, the monolith committee convener, chaired the proceedings.
The program included an invocation by Gagan Thapa and scripture readings from Nandu Kumar Thapa and Rekha Thapa. Former MP Khyomo Lotha offered greetings to the attendees. John Thakuri introduced the jubilee souvenir, which Pastor Jack Thapa released. The Jubilee Choir and the Nepali Baptist Church of Sechü Zubza provided musical performances. C.B. Gurung closed the session with a benediction.
The church has deep roots in the region. Late Jodhbir Hamal became the first convert in 1959. The congregation held its first outreach on August 3, 1976. This date is now celebrated annually as Church Foundation Day. Supported by the Union Baptist Church, the group grew from humble beginnings to a significant community institution. In 2001, the church celebrated its silver jubilee with 726 members. Records from April 5, 2026, show 1,656 registered baptized members.
Events continue through August 2. A formal thanksgiving service is set for September 13. Future speakers include Rev. Dr. Mar Pongener, Rev. Rajendra Malla, Rev. Dr. Rachulie Vihienuo, and Visato Yhoshu. Rev. Dr. Ruokuovilie Sachii and Hari Magar will also share greetings during the upcoming weekend services.
