Kohima: Nagaland officials met in Chümoukedima on July 11 to review the implementation of the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) for 2026-27. This initiative, managed by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, targets livestock sector reforms nationwide with a 3,000 crore rupee allocation. The state government categorized Nagaland as Category D. Jagat Hazarika, an adviser from the Ministry, led the review to address state-specific hurdles.
Angelina Tajen, secretary of Nagaland’s Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, identified significant roadblocks during the meeting. She cited difficult terrain, poor connectivity, and recurring African Swine Fever as primary concerns. The department has appointed 10 joint directors to supervise 17 districts to improve oversight. She urged officials to operate with urgency. "The biggest challenge was completing the programme within the stipulated timeline and stressed the need for officers to work together in mission mode on a war footing," Tajen stated.
The department requested additional support for the piggery sector, specifically regarding biosecurity and compensation. They advocated for local breeds like Nagal and Tenyivo. Technical presentations included details on the National Digital Livestock Mission and a vision for smart farming by 2047. Visiting officials toured two dairy farms in Ura Village and Chümoukedima following the session.
Separately, Nagaland observed a one-day state mourning period on Monday. The state honored the passing of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, the Father Amir of Qatar. Officials flew the National Flag at half-mast across all government buildings. All official entertainment events remained suspended for the duration of the day.
