Kohima: Nagaland officials want a perfect count. The Directorate of Census Operations held a briefing at Hotel De Oriental in Kohima to drive home the importance of the 2027 Census of India. This is the 16th time the country has run this operation. Dr. Kenei Miachieo, the state director, confirmed that Phase I, covering houselisting and housing, is already done.
Work continues on the village and town directory. Officials expect to finish that task by October 30, 2026. Teams are also currently training staff for Phase II, which focuses on population enumeration. Deputy Director Imkongnungsang Longkumer noted that this data acts as a foundation for all future state planning.
Kohima Press Club President Vishü Rita Krocha spoke to reporters about the stakes involved. She warned that bad data leads to poor resource distribution and missed opportunities for the next ten years. Krocha called on the media to help fix public perception. She told attendees, "our responsibility is to ensure that the right information reaches the people, to dispel any myths or apprehensions that might exist, and to encourage every citizen to participate actively and truthfully."
The event included a welcome from Assistant Director Chuyalo Kath. Junior Executive Mharani Kithan chaired the session, while Kuku Livi provided the final vote of thanks.
