Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio marked the state's 80th Independence Day on Saturday at the Civil Secretariat Plaza in Kohima. He unfurled the National Flag and inspected the parade. Rio used the platform to demand an early, honorable settlement to the long-standing Naga Political Issue. He urged the Centre to engage with all negotiating groups with, as he stated, "urgency and clarity."
The state government aims for a swift resolution. Rio highlighted a September 12, 2024, consultative meeting where tribal bodies, churches, and political parties demanded talks reach the highest political levels. He noted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah formed a committee led by a Minister of State for Home Affairs to spearhead these negotiations following a February 5 meeting.
Tensions marked the holiday. The Naga Students' Federation successfully enforced a boycott of the celebrations. Students stayed home to protest the mandatory singing of the full Vande Mataram song. The federation cited concerns over individual conscience and constitutional protections like Article 371A. No students attended the official event.
Rio also committed to the Frontier Nagaland Territorial Authority. He called the February 5 memorandum between the state, the Centre, and the Eastern Nagaland Peoples' Organisation a historic milestone. He promised full cooperation for the authority's early operationalisation to address developmental gaps in eastern districts.
Security remains a concern. An IED attack on an Assam Rifles vehicle in Chümoukedima killed one soldier and left four others with grievous injuries. The National Investigation Agency is now leading the probe. Meanwhile, the state's War on Drugs remains active. Authorities registered over 407 cases and arrested 677 people between January 2024 and May 2026.
The government pushed several major infrastructure projects. Plans include an IIT at Ciethu and a greenfield AIIMS at Nagaki City. Officials also launched the Nagaland Integrated Information System, the Education Management Information System, and a 10 MW solar power plant at Hovukhu in Niuland. Additionally, a June 2026 tripartite agreement with Assam and the Centre aims to begin oil and gas exploration in the Disputed Area Belt.

Rio addressed the state's severe monsoon crisis, confirming that relentless rains triggered widespread landslides and flash floods. He noted that the worst hit occurred in Mon district, where the storms claimed lives and left many injured. The Chief Minister confirmed the state disaster management agency and district teams are running ongoing rescue and restoration operations.
An Inter-Ministerial Central Team from the Ministry of Home Affairs recently visited the state to survey the wreckage. The team is evaluating the total damage to homes, private property, and public infrastructure to determine necessary recovery support. Rio designated the repair of shattered connectivity and essential infrastructure as a top priority for his administration.
The Independence Day event also featured the formal recognition of civil servants and police personnel who received awards for their meritorious service during the ceremony.

Beyond the political maneuvering, Rio pushed the state's development agenda, highlighting plans to turn Nagaki into a dedicated incubation city. He also touted broader goals for the state including progress in healthcare, sports, skill development, drinking water, agriculture, and tourism sectors.
While the NSF boycott kept students from the official parade, local police reported no official complaints regarding forced obstruction, framing the federation's directive as a voluntary appeal. The state government honored police and civil servants with awards during the ceremony for their distinguished service.
During the political briefing, the Chief Minister referenced a September 1, 2025, meeting of the Political Affairs Committee in Kohima. He stated this session formally reiterated the previous consensus that peace talks require an interlocutor holding high-level political or ministerial authority to gain necessary traction.

Beyond the peace process, Rio signaled a major boost for the state police force. The government recently added 550 new vehicles to its fleet, funded through Union Ministry of Home Affairs modernization grants. These vehicles were flagged off on July 27, 2026, to increase operational reach across the state.
The administrative footprint also expanded this fiscal year. The government completed and inaugurated several key offices, including the DC Office Complex at Shamator and various ADC and SDO(C) office buildings in Akuluto, Seyochung, Tamlu, Ralan, Chozuba, Tobu, Medziphema, and Sungro.
Regarding the IED attack on Assam Rifles personnel, the Chief Minister publicly labeled the strike a cowardly act that has no place in society. He confirmed that federal investigators from the NIA are now handling the case to track down those responsible.

Rio emphasized that the government maintains its role as an active facilitator in the peace process. He clarified that the move to elevate negotiations to a ministerial level directly addresses the consensus reached by stakeholders, including tribal hohos and civil society, during the September 2024 and September 2025 meetings.
The state police force received a significant boost in operational capacity. Rio confirmed the acquisition of 550 new vehicles funded through federal police modernization grants to sharpen the force's response times and mobility.
