Naga Transplant Survivors Advocate for Organ Donation

Kohima: ColoMero faced a terminal diagnosis four years ago. A master checkup in Guwahati revealed stage 5 chronic kidney disease. He had barely 10 percent of his kidney function remaining. Doctors told him he could drop dead at any time. The news shattered his world. He worried about his three daughters and his unfinished work.

Nine people volunteered to donate a kidney to Mero. He found the support overwhelming. His daughter, Tekhe, insisted on donating her organ. Mero underwent a successful transplant. He describes the act as an expression of profound love. Mero now pushes for more awareness in Naga society. He believes many people fear donating blood or organs. He plans to mentor other patients on medical procedures and necessary documentation.

Tekhe, who was 20 at the time, felt a deep conviction to help her father. She and Mero share a birthday on December 23. She recovered in less than two months and completed her bachelor degree. She says, "choosing to donate is one of the biggest blessings in my life."

Neibalie Rio faced a similar struggle. Diagnosed in 2014, Rio initially sought alternative treatments in China. He tried herbal detox programs to repair his kidneys, but they failed. He eventually found the courage to undergo a transplant. His younger brother donated a kidney on July 31, 2015. Rio has lived as a transplant recipient for 11 years. He credits his recovery to faith and family support. Both men argue that better dialysis and transplant facilities must be prioritized in the state.
