Kohima: Nagaland Department of Health and Family Welfare officials handed out free spectacles to 34 students at TM Government Higher Secondary School in Kohima this Tuesday. The gear arrived via the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment.
Dr. Phyantsuthung, the Joint Director and Programme Officer, oversaw the distribution. He detailed the department’s broad reach. The agency focuses on cataract prevention, reading glasses for seniors, eye donations, and regular school screenings. Medical staff use a computerised autorefractor to check vision before approving anyone for free glasses.
The state has big plans. Officials aim to find 7,200 beneficiaries by the 2026-27 financial year. Dr. Phyantsuthung spoke directly to the room. "Urging students to wear their spectacles regularly, he also advised them to take care of their eyesight by reducing screen time."
School leaders expressed gratitude for the outreach. Principal Kelhikha Kenye thanked the health department for providing the glasses and boosting awareness about eye health. Vice Principal Er Khriezosietuo Suohu and Graduate Teacher Liza Zhimomi also attended the event.
