Kohima: Nagaland health officials issued an emergency advisory to medical officers in Dimapur and Peren districts. The move follows a cluster of seven reported cases in children admitted to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research (CIHSR). Six patients have already been released. One child remains in critical condition.

The 14-year-old boy, admitted August 2, suffered from fever, vomiting, hypotension, and altered sensorium. He is currently being managed for septic shock with purpura fulminans. Microbiological confirmation for the suspected Neisseria meningitidis infection is pending. There was one reported suspected death, though officials await laboratory results.

Dr. Akumtoshi, a pediatrician at Zion Hospital and Research Centre, urged the public to stay calm. He noted that while small, localized outbreaks occur sporadically in India, they do not warrant mass panic. He stated, "Because it is not very common in Nagaland, people are panicking a bit now. We don't need to panic. It's not a big outbreak, we just need to be vigilant and see a doctor if there are symptoms."

The bacteria spread through respiratory droplets, coughing, sneezing, and sharing personal items like utensils, water bottles, or cigarettes. Adolescents in crowded spaces such as hostels and dormitories remain at the highest risk. Symptoms include severe headache, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, confusion, and a reddish-purple rash that does not fade under pressure.

Medical teams advise immediate consultation for anyone displaying these signs. While third-generation antibiotics can treat the disease, doctors emphasize that early reporting and vaccination remain the most effective defenses. Prophylactic medication is available for those who have had close contact with infected individuals.
