Aizawl: Mizoram's political spectrum has formed a rare united front to demand tighter control over the state's electoral rolls. Representatives from the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, BJP, and the People’s Conference met in Aizawl to address the integrity of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The student group Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) convened the meeting. They are worried about fraud. The parties want the Election Commission of India to extend the current August 4, 2026 deadline for the SIR exercise. They argue that monsoon rains, difficult terrain, poor road connectivity, and a lack of manpower have hampered officials.
"The parties pledged to extend full cooperation to ensure that the revision is conducted in a fair, transparent and credible manner," a leader stated. They agreed to block unauthorized voter applications and ordered their own workers not to assist with such enrollments.
Parties are targeting forged documents. They urged the public to report any evidence of fake registrations. The coalition also called on Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) to be vigilant during hearings and demanded punishment for any official found being negligent.
Draft rolls released on July 4 show 8,28,906 total electors, including 4,29,881 women, across 11 districts. Officials failed to collect 46,163 enumeration forms, roughly 5.28 percent of the total. Data shows 21,295 voters died, 13,978 permanently migrated, 8,333 remain untraceable, 2,248 already have registration elsewhere, and 309 refused enrollment for religious reasons.
Joint Chief Electoral Officer Ethel Rotluangpuii met with the party representatives and MZP leaders following the session to discuss the resolution.
