Aizawl: Aizawl officials launched a four-stream waste collection system this week. The city ditched its old two-stream model. Now, residents must split trash into wet, dry, sanitary, and special-care categories. Each stream moves through independent processing and disposal pipelines.
The Aizawl Municipal Corporation hosted the rollout at the Thuampui Auditorium on Thursday. Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Minister K Sapdanga attended alongside Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena. The plan follows the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. Only seven of the city's 19 wards currently participate.
Officials want cleaner streets. Sapdanga asked churches, residents, and community groups to help the program succeed. He reminded the public that sanitation drives economic growth and city status. "Cleanliness is an important indicator of development," the minister said.
Sapdanga also invoked the Mizo value of Tlawmngaihna. This spirit of selflessness supports civic duty. Success requires active public participation.
The city has a track record with waste processing. AMC Assistant Architect Veronica Vanlalhriata reported that the city turned biodegradable scraps into 464.395 tonnes of compost over the last two years. That effort brought in more than Rs 26 lakh in revenue.
