Shillong: The Meghalaya government will jail ten more suspected drug traffickers. Officials are moving to place these individuals under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The process should finish within two months. State authorities already extended the detention of several repeat offenders by another year to break up organized smuggling.
Paul Lyngdoh, adviser to the Social Welfare department, confirmed the plan on Friday. He said the state uses a multi-pronged approach to fight drugs. Border areas remain at high risk. These regions sit near primary transit routes. The government currently runs the DREAM Mission to boost awareness across the state.
Technology helps the crackdown. The state launched a new K-9 squad to sniff out contraband. Workers are building a new facility at Ratacherra to improve border surveillance. Officials are also buying a specialized scanner vehicle to find hidden narcotics in cargo. Lyngdoh stated, "The combination of preventive detention, intensified policing and enhanced technology reflects the government’s commitment to protecting the youth from substance abuse."
