Shillong: Congress leader Vincent H. Pala compared United Democratic Party (UDP) stalwart Paul Lyngdoh to a wounded lion on October 26. The veteran politician faces fresh pressure after eleven MLAs jumped ship. Pala noted that Lyngdoh dealt with major hurdles before joining the regional party and continued to struggle despite his internal success.
Pala remains skeptical about Lyngdoh’s next move into the National People’s Party. He specifically questioned whether the move would secure the politician a ministerial berth. The mass departure of the eleven legislators leaves the UDP in a precarious spot. Pala compared their current instability to the recent woes of the Trinamool Congress in the region.
"The UDP leader had faced challenges even before joining the regional party and had suffered further setbacks despite performing well within the organisation," Pala said. Still, he believes the UDP retains deep grassroots roots in villages across Meghalaya. He contrasted this local strength against the BJP, which he claims still struggles to gain a foothold in the state.
Winning over voters matters more than collecting politicians. Pala warned that parties must earn the trust of ordinary people to truly win. He argued that the state needs a regional force to fight for the interests of indigenous communities. The UDP is not dead yet.
