Shillong: Meghalaya kicks off its Har Ghar Tiranga campaign today. Residents will fly the national flag from August 9 to 17 to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. The Community and Rural Development Secretary finalized the logistics during a coordination meeting at the Main Secretariat.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma will unfurl the flag on August 14. He leads the National Handloom Day ceremony at Ri Sai in Ri-Bhoi. Locals are crafting special Eri silk flags for the event. The Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society acts as the nodal agency for the state. Every government department must hoist the flag at their offices following the Flag Code of India.
The state is tapping into grassroots power. Self-Help Groups, Village Employment Councils, and various community organizations are pushing for widespread participation. Local SHGs and USHA Silai units are busy stitching flags to meet demand. The government stated, "The government has, meanwhile, appealed to all citizens to hoist the flag at their homes to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram and demonstrate national pride."
Digital engagement remains a priority. Officials want people to upload photos to harghartiranga.com for the Selfie with Tiranga campaign. The website also hosts the lyrics to Vande Mataram for use in official events. The campaign wraps up at the August 15 Independence Day ceremony held at Lok Bhavan.
