Shillong: Unidentified attackers are targeting women in Mawkyrwat with catapults. Members of the Seng Longkmie women’s organisation faced the strikes while conducting night patrols meant to stop substance abuse and anti-social behavior. The violence erupted over the past few days as these women worked to prevent the sale of illegal drugs and illicit liquor.
Newtonroy Lyngkhoi, the village secretary, confirmed the attacks. He noted that the village is also reeling from a spike in local thefts, including a failed break-in at a shop owned by the secretary of the Village Defence Party. The situation remains tense. The Dorbar Shnong Mawkyrwat met with South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police B. Jyrwa to demand swift arrests.
Lyngkhoi warned the perpetrators to surrender before authorities hunt them down. He maintains that the community continues to stabilize despite the intimidation. "Peace and normalcy are gradually returning to the village through the dedicated efforts of the Seng Longkmie and the Mawkyrwat VDP," Lyngkhoi said.
