Shillong: A high-level Thai delegation arrived at the Indian Institute of Public Health in Shillong this Wednesday. They want to team up on medical research, education, and public health projects. The group seeks to bridge gaps between Northeast India and Thailand.
Urasa Mongkolnavin led the mission. She serves as the Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs for Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She brought senior ministry officials and staff from the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi along for the trip.
The delegation also included academics from Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, Ubon Ratchathani, and Prince of Songkla universities. IIPH Registrar Dr. Tiameren Jamir greeted the team. He noted that shared public health challenges provide significant scope for joint research and capacity building. Jamir pointed to the ecological and cultural ties between the two regions as a solid starting point for cooperation.
Prof. Melari Shisha Nongrum, Dean of Academics, detailed the institute’s current efforts to strengthen health systems. Her work spans Meghalaya and the broader Northeast. The talks focused on faculty and student exchanges, academic partnerships, and epidemiological research.
