Kohima: Nagaland districts Longleng and Mokokchung are grappling with severe infrastructure collapse following relentless monsoon rains. On August 4, Longleng officials met with National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) representatives to address a crisis that has severed road links to villages, forests, and farmlands.
Deputy Commissioner W. Manpai Phom described the situation as a “massive disaster” that goes far beyond routine monsoon disruptions. Several villages in the Namsang area and the Yongyah EAC circle remain completely isolated. The administration has requested that the state government officially notify Longleng as an L3 Disaster Affected Area.
Y. B. Angam Phom, president of the Phom People’s Council, filed an urgent demand for repairs to NH 702. The list includes structural protection for the Dikhu Bridge, reconstruction from Yongmon to Longleng, and a full realignment of the Longleng town bypass. The council also pushed for better quality control and environmental cleanup.
NHIDCL Executive Director R. P. Singh promised to prioritize temporary fixes like clearing debris and installing Bailey bridges to keep one lane open. He stated that permanent road repairs cannot start until September due to the current weather. The agency plans to restore links to Assam and neighboring states as soon as conditions allow.
Separately, Mokokchung officials provided an update on their own disaster response. Deputy Commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma confirmed that assessment teams finished surveying damaged sites across villages and subdivisions by August 2. Nodal Officer Temsuwangshi and Additional Deputy Commissioner Atsungba Walling stated that restoration of basic infrastructure is currently underway in coordination with local departments. Officials continue to monitor the regions and distribute emergency aid to displaced families.
