Guwahati: The Lok Sabha passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, on July 29. The law targets paper leaks and cheating. It aims to secure the integrity of public tests nationwide. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma backed the move. He believes it will fix the system.
Sarma took to X to share his support. "Congratulations to all students of the country on the passage of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha," he said. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the push for student protections.
The law mandates strict punishments for offenders. It establishes special fast-track courts to handle these cases. These courts must hear matters on a day-to-day basis. Chargesheets will trigger a strict timeline. Trials must wrap up within three months of the filing date.
Government officials noted the changes follow lessons from existing laws. They want a more accountable process. The update will speed up investigations and tighten prosecution for organized cheating. This framework should keep the exams fair for every student.
