Shillong: Majai village residents are stuck in administrative limbo. A bitter leadership feud has halted basic services for over a year. Locals now trek to the Hima Sohra office for simple paperwork and certificates. The trouble started after the regular Sordar was suspended.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council held a hearing Tuesday to address the removal of the village's Acting Sordar. Participants included Executive Members Denzil R. Chen and Aibandaplin F. Lyngdoh, along with Hima Sohra reps and Majai's leadership. Majai Dorbar Shnong secretary Daminot Sohtun confirmed the village secured formal approval for an Acting Sordar following the initial suspension. That changed August 1.
Hima Sohra officials ordered the Acting Sordar out. They gave no reason. The village Dorbar pushed back hard against the sudden mandate. Sohtun said the stalemate hurts the poor most. He stated, "The ongoing stalemate has caused severe inconvenience to residents, particularly those from poorer backgrounds who must travel long distances to the Hima Sohra office for routine administrative clearances."
The council hearing ended without a resolution. Hima Sohra representatives asked for more time to review the files. The KHADC granted the extension, leaving the village to wait.
