Guwahati: Kokrajhar district officials ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of Phunkha Basumatary. He died during a July 28 firing incident involving forest protection personnel inside Raimona National Park. The park sits directly on the India-Bhutan border.
Pressure built quickly. Political parties and various local organizations demanded an impartial investigation into the state of the shooting. They pushed for transparency and clear accountability from the forest guards involved.
Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty confirmed the order on Tuesday. He noted the probe will focus on the exact circumstances leading to the fatality. "The district administration has decided to conduct a magisterial inquiry to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident," Chakravarty said.
The clock is ticking. The administration expects a full report within one month.
