Tribal Groups Protest in Kokrajhar Over Land Encroachment

Guwahati: Ten tribal groups brought traffic to a halt in Kokrajhar on October 8. They staged a three-hour protest at the Government Higher Secondary and Multipurpose Playground. The groups demanded better protection for their land and strict enforcement of current laws.

Organizers included the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organisations of Assam, All Bodo Students Union, Rabha Students Union, Garo Students Union, and All Assam Tribal Sangha. They sent a formal memo to BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma via the Kokrajhar District Commissioner. The document calls for an immediate stop to illegal land transfers to non-protected communities.

Former Lok Sabha MP Sansuma Khungur Bwiswmuthiary addressed the crowd. He highlighted constitutional safeguards like the Sixth Schedule. He claims more than three lakh bighas of tribal land in the BTC region now sit under illegal control. Bwiswmuthiary said, "Tribal communities had been given constitutional safeguards after Independence, including protection under the Sixth Schedule in designated areas."

The protesters want the government to evict illegal occupiers using proper legal channels. They also demand better monitoring of tribal belts and blocks. These groups remain committed to their cause. They plan to keep pressing state officials until they secure their constitutional and land rights.
