Guwahati: Kokrajhar officials launched a formal magisterial inquiry into the death of Phunkha Basumatary. He died during a July 28 firing incident involving forest protection personnel inside Raimona National Park. The park sits directly along the India-Bhutan international border.
Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Chakravarty ordered the investigation after mounting pressure from local political parties and various organizations. The public demands accountability. They want a transparent look at why the forest guards opened fire.
The inquiry will establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. "The district administration has decided to conduct a magisterial inquiry to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident," Chakravarty said. Investigators must submit their final report within one month.
