Itanagar: Arunachal police kicked off a new initiative to tighten public security in Itanagar. Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar started Project Sahtam on November 3. The name comes from the Nyishi word for protection. It aims to stop theft and fraud by vetting tenants, domestic help, and employees.

The pilot phase runs from November 5 to 18. It covers Sectors 1 through 4 under the Itanagar Police Station. Officers will check identities, addresses, and criminal records. Sector Officers will handle physical verification at local addresses. They may also reach out to stations in a person's home district. Residents pushed for this after reports of workers vanishing with cash or valuables. Basar noted the need for clarity, stating, "Every resident deserves to know who they are letting into their home or workplace. Project Sahtam is a shield for the people of Itanagar: simple, free and voluntary."

Interested parties can grab forms from the Itanagar Police Station or via the Capital Police Facebook page. Applicants must bring two copies of the form, a photo, and original documents. The station issues a reference number for each file. Expect a report within one week, delivered via WhatsApp or in person. Delays may occur if outside stations are slow to respond.

This program is strictly voluntary and requires the subject's consent. It costs nothing. The reports confirm identity and background checks but do not function as a character certificate. Designated officers for the pilot are SI Tatung Tari for Sector 1, SI Kipa Robin for Sector 2, SI Tana Suraj for Sector 3, and SI Padam Padi for Sector 4. Police urge all households to participate.
