Itanagar: The Union Health Ministry finalized its leadership team for the National Dental Commission. Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava led the draw of lots to pick 19 part-time members. These officials will serve two-year terms. The selection process involved Additional Secretary Vinod Kotwal and various ministry staff.
Ten spots went to representatives from state and Union Territory governments. These appointees hail from Sikkim, Jharkhand, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Mizoram, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Nine additional members represent state dental councils. These come from Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Karnataka, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Puducherry.
The ministry also assigned board seats through this lottery. Telangana joined the Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate Dental Education Board. Karnataka took a seat on the Dental Assessment and Rating Board. Madhya Pradesh landed on the Ethics and Dental Registration Board. The ministry confirmed the draw followed the specific statutory procedure required by law.
The Centre replaced the old Dental Council of India with this new framework earlier this year. The change aims to overhaul how the country handles dental education. An official statement noted that "the draw of lots followed the statutory procedure prescribed under the Act for appointing part-time members to the commission and its autonomous boards." This new system went live on March 19.
