India Secures Boxing Gold as Football and Golf Tournaments Heat Up

Shillong: Indian boxers Vishvanath Suresh and Ganga dominated the ring in Jakarta. They clinched gold medals on Thursday at the Asian U-19 and U-23 Boxing Championships. Vishvanath outlasted Japan’s Daichi Iwai 3-2 in the 50kg final. Ganga defeated Kazakhstan’s Bexulatn Boranbek by the same margin to secure the 55kg title.

Other bouts ended with silver for India. Vanshaj lost 4-1 to Uzbekistan’s Ilkhomjon Ergashev in the 65kg class. In the U-19 finals, Aditya and Shubham Rajput both fell 5-0 to Uzbek opponents Elyor Rustamov and Asadbek Sultanboev.

Football is next on the agenda. The Indian Under-17 women’s team learned their road to the Asian Cup on Thursday. The AFC draw placed them in Group E alongside Iraq, Syria, and Malaysia. Matches run from October 5 to 11. India faces Iraq first. They want a repeat appearance at the Asian Cup in Suzhou, China.

The winner of Group E advances. North Korea, Japan, Australia, and China already hold spots. A good finish in Suzhou could punch a ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Morocco. Coach perspectives remain focused as the squad looks to build on history. One source noted, "The Indian team had made a historic first-ever knockout stage appearance in the previous edition."

On the links in Kolar, Ridhima Dilawari holds a two-shot lead. She carded 1-under 71 in the second round of the Hero Women’s Pro Golf Tour. She sits at 5-under 139 overall. Amandeep Drall and Vidhatri Urs trail her at 141. Ridhima overcame a double bogey on the 17th with a birdie on the final hole. Vani Kapoor sits alone in fourth place after shooting 73.
