IIM Guwahati Opens Doors With First MBA Class

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma officially opened the first MBA session at IIM Guwahati on July 21. This move establishes the institute as the 22nd IIM in the country. The inaugural 2026-28 batch consists of 52 students hailing from 18 states across India. The school currently operates out of a temporary campus at Tech City, Bongora, in the Kamrup district.

State officials invested nearly Rs 39 crore to convert the Tech City facility into a functional academic site. It now holds classrooms, offices, a library, residential quarters, and three hostel blocks. IIM Ahmedabad is currently guiding the institute's academic programs. Work on a permanent campus at Morabhita and Dighalkuchi villages, within the Palashbari Revenue Circle, is already underway. That site covers 574 bighas of land and should be finished in three years.

Sarma celebrated the launch alongside Education Minister Ranoj Pegu and MLA Himangshu Sekhar Baishya. IIM Ahmedabad Director Professor Bharat Bhasker and Higher Education Commissioner Narayan Konwar also attended the event. The Chief Minister addressed the crowd during the ceremony. "Today marks the fulfilment of a long-cherished aspiration of the people of Assam and the North Eastern Region," Sarma said. The government expects the new institute to drive economic and social growth in the region.
