Kohima: A roadside explosion ripped through an Assam Rifles convoy in Nagaland’s Chumoukedima district on Monday, July 13. Havildar Mohammad Iqbal died in the blast. Four other soldiers sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital. The exact nature of their injuries remains undisclosed.
The attack occurred near Sokhuvi village. The convoy was returning to Dimapur when the device detonated. It tore through one of the vehicles. This is the second IED strike against security forces in the district within a single week. The situation is tense.
Major Digvijay Singh Rawat, a retired Army officer and Kirti Chakra awardee, pointed fingers at the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah). He alleged the outfit colluded with the United Liberation Front of Asom for the ambush. He wrote, "Second IED blast within a week by NSCN(IM) over Assam Rifles convoy at Chumoukedima, Nagaland. ULFA & NSCN have been working together in many ambushes in past over security forces."
Official channels have not confirmed the involvement of any insurgent group. No organization has claimed responsibility for the carnage. Assam Rifles and Dimapur Police launched a joint search operation. They are combing the area for suspects. Security teams tightened their grip on the site.
Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera and the entire Assam Rifles leadership issued a statement honoring the fallen soldier. The force pledged to support the bereaved family of Havildar Iqbal. Investigators continue to study the site. They are determining if the device was triggered remotely or planted by the roadside.
