Kohima: An improvised explosive device killed an Assam Rifles soldier and injured four others on July 13. The blast struck near the Assam Rifles Training Centre and School at Chümoukedima A. It also occurred near the Chümoukedima Town Council waste management site at Khopanala, Shukhovi. The explosion has drawn swift condemnation from civil society, student unions, and political groups across Nagaland.
The NSCN-IM called the explosion a “cowardly terrorist act” that threatens regional peace. The group denied involvement, citing its commitment to the Indo-Naga ceasefire agreement and a pledge to avoid landmines under the Geneva Call Deed of Commitment. They promised to find those responsible for the violence.
Multiple organizations demanded justice. The Nagaland Baptist Church Council, Chümoukedima Village Council, and Chümoukedima A Village Council urged authorities to conduct an immediate, intelligence-led investigation. The Chümoukedima Town Mechü Krotho and the Naga People’s Front also issued statements. They warned that the attack endangers civilians and attempts to undo decades of hard-won stability.
The Naga Students’ Federation and Angami Youth Organisation labeled the bombing a pre-planned ambush. They warned of external forces attempting to incite communal tension. Other groups, including Naga Hoho, NNC/FGN, NSCN-Reformation, Western Sümi Students’ Union, and the International Human Rights Council, joined the call for accountability. These groups urged residents to report suspicious activity and stay united. Security agencies have been tasked with identifying all perpetrators and their collaborators. The search for the bombers continues.
