Kohima: The Dimapur Lotha Students Union launched a new historical study on Thursday at the Dimapur Lotha Hoho Ki. The book, titled Proselytization of Christianity from Animism: Conversion and Conflict, 1872-1972, examines a century of religious shift in the region. Author Y. Vungthungo holds degrees in history, archaeology, and education. He wrote the work to clarify the social changes and friction linked to the spread of Christianity among the Lotha and Naga people.
Chonben Kithan chaired the launch event. Women pastor Chanchano Ngullie opened the session with an invocation. Mhonbemo M. Kikon, the DLSU president, welcomed attendees including church leaders, youth representatives, and various community delegates. Performers Chon VK, Bro, and Lansothung Lotha provided music for the crowd. Rev. Lumtsuo Ezung, executive secretary of the Nagamese Baptist Church Association, dedicated the book.
M. Patton, a retired IAS officer and chairman of Unity College Dimapur, released the text as the guest of honor. He stressed the need for local research. "The publication was intended to contribute to a better understanding of the historical developments, social changes and conflicts associated with the spread of Christianity and conversion during the period covered by the book also highlighting on the rich history of the Lothas and Nagas in general," Kikon stated. Thungjanthung Khenchung introduced the author, who shared his reflections on the research.
Groups including the Dimapur Lotha Hoho, Dimapur Lotha Eloe Ekhung, Dimapur Naga Students Union, and the Dimapur Lotha Youth Organization offered greetings. Mhonyamo Kikon spoke on behalf of the family. The event finished with a vote of thanks from DLSU vice president Thungbemo W. Kikon and a benediction by Rev. Wojanthung of the Diphupar (B) Lotha Baptist Church.
