Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi fired back at the Centre's latest attempt to stop exam fraud. He spoke in the Lok Sabha on July 28. He argued the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, will fail just like the 2024 law. He noted the government touted the original version as a historic move against cheating. It did not stop the 2026 NEET-UG leak.
The new Bill proposes harsher penalties. Convicts could face 10 years in prison. Fines could reach Rs 50 lakh. The government tabled this measure after massive protests and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Gogoi ridiculed BJP members for cheering Pradhan upon his return to Parliament. He asked them, "When he came here, he was welcomed as if he had returned after fighting with Pakistan. Do you have no shame?"
Gogoi also slammed the police response to student demonstrators. He alleged authorities used pellet guns and electric batons on protesters. He pressed the government to explain why students were treated with such force. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also faced criticism. Gogoi accused the Prime Minister of pushing ministers to focus on social media instead of fixing broken systems like coaching centers and the printing press mafia.
The Congress leader demanded clarity on the K. Radhakrishnan committee. This group formed following the 2024 controversy. He also challenged claims regarding the National Testing Agency. The government said it removed 47 employees. Gogoi noted the agency only lists 34 sanctioned positions. He asked the House, "Who are these 47 people? The country deserves to know."
