Guwahati: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi blasted the Union government this week for the persistent absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah from the Lok Sabha. Opposition parties demanded answers on July 28 regarding the alleged July 20 assault of youths by Delhi Police and central agency personnel. Gogoi pressed for accountability, seeking the source of the orders behind what he labeled a barbaric attack.
Gogoi took to the floor to demand the Home Minister appear in the House to address the violence. The minister stayed away. Tensions flared further on July 29 during Question Hour when opposition leaders questioned the government on education issues. They protested what they termed injustice and demanded a formal government response. The empty front benches drew sharp fire from the Congress leader.
Gogoi told reporters outside Parliament, "There is a discussion on the examination, and the Prime Minister or the Home Minister is not in the House. What kind of discussion is this where the Prime Minister is absent and the Home Minister is not present?" He suggested the leadership is actively avoiding the subject. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi is slated to join the debate later in the day.
