Guwahati: Congress MP and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, slammed the government's proposed anti-paper leak amendments on July 28. He dismissed the 2026 Bill as ineffective, pointing to the failure of the original 2024 legislation. The government tabled the Bill in the Lok Sabha on Monday, following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan sparked by the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. The new plan hits offenders with up to 10 years in prison and Rs 50 lakh in fines.
Gogoi didn't hold back. He attacked the BJP for celebrating Pradhan’s return to Parliament. "When he came here, he was welcomed as if he had returned after fighting with Pakistan. Do you have no shame?" Gogoi asked. He also pressed the government on the Radhakrishnan committee and demanded clarity on National Testing Agency staffing, noting that 47 people were removed despite a sanctioned strength of only 34.
Beyond the legislation, tensions remain high regarding the July 20 crackdown on protesters. Gogoi claimed Delhi Police and central agency personnel used pellet guns and electric batons against students. He blasted the treatment of female demonstrators. "Students were compelled to hit the streets. Their pain needs to be understood," he said.
Gogoi and other opposition leaders demanded answers regarding who ordered the police assault on youths. They want Home Minister Amit Shah to appear in the Lok Sabha. Shah remained absent all day. Gogoi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring systemic rot in coaching centres and printing presses to focus on social media optics.
