Guwahati: Five Congress hopefuls want the party ticket for the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll. Party sources confirmed the applications on August 28. The list of hopefuls includes former MLAs Sibamoni Bora and Durlav Chamua. Imdad Hussain, Maidul Islam Khan, and Ranjit Barman also applied before the Friday deadline.
Candidates had to pay up. Each hopeful submitted a non-refundable demand draft of Rs 1 lakh to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. They also provided a certified copy of the electoral roll showing their names to the party treasurer. The seat sits empty now. Former MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the post before joining the BJP in March, just ahead of the April Assam Assembly elections.
The Election Commission has not released the by-election schedule yet. Party leadership must now vet the five aspirants. A party source noted, "The Congress is expected to assess the claims of the five aspirants before finalising its candidate for the crucial bypoll."
