Kohima: Nagaland University's Department of Linguistics held a two-day international workshop in Dimapur. The event focused on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Preservation of Indigenous Languages: Challenges and Opportunities. Experts gathered to address how technology can help save at-risk languages.
Technologists, linguists, and policy makers filled the room. They studied strategies for documentation and ways to improve digital access to local speech. The attendees examined the future of language preservation through interdisciplinary action.
A diverse group of speakers led the sessions. The roster included Dr. Prasanna Ramakrishnan from Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia and Vijayakumar Krishnan, a consultant from Chennai. Olga V. Glukhova of Rostov State University of Economics in Russia and Dr. Soo Koung Jun from South Korea’s Namseoul University also spoke. Er. Saranya Muthusamy, CEO of Bonfring Consulting Services in India, rounded out the expert panel.
The university stated the event brought together minds to "examine technological approaches to language documentation, digital access and interdisciplinary strategies for scaling up indigenous language preservation."
