Guwahati: Sub-Inspector Nabajit Das died Friday after a vehicle struck him during a roadside check in Laisong. Das, the in-charge of the Laisong Police Outpost, worked to stop the car before it hit him. He sustained severe injuries and died before arriving at Haflong Civil Hospital.

Police tracked the vehicle, registered as AS 02 AJ 4335, and recovered it near the scene. Officers arrested two suspects during a late-night operation, though two others remain at large. The investigation took a dark turn when authorities identified the vehicle owner as Abdul Quddus from Juria in Nagaon district. Quddus, who faces accusations in multiple drug trafficking cases, is now in police custody for questioning. Records suggest his three sons also have histories involving robbery and narcotics.

The force held a formal tribute for the fallen officer. Attendees included Dima Hasao SSP Ripunjoy Kakoti, 26 Assam Rifles Commanding Officer Colonel Rakesh Krishnan, and Additional SPs Faruque Ahmed and Luit Talukdar. The department mourns the officer who died on duty. Officials continue to hunt for the two remaining fugitives while examining the link between the crash and criminal syndicates.

Police have intensified the search for the remaining suspects, while further investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident is underway. Das was a permanent resident of Udaguri in the Udalguri district.

The Assam Minority Struggle Council has waded into the case, submitting a memorandum demanding justice for Das. Leader Abubakkar Siddique called the officer's death a distressing consequence of the local drug trade, warning authorities that the organization will launch a democratic movement if drug mafia bases in the Juria area are not dismantled within 12 hours.

Police have identified the main accused in the hit-and-run as Selim Ahmed, who remains on the run. A team from Dima Hasao has traveled to Juria in the Nagaon district to lean on local leads and track down the suspect. Investigators also confirmed that Das was working specialized vehicle checks ahead of the Independence Day holiday when the fatal strike occurred.

Investigators confirmed Das worked the roadside check as part of a statewide security push ahead of Independence Day. The outpost falls under the jurisdiction of the Mahur police station.

Separately, a crash on National Highway 137 near Chudiningram killed 40-year-old Haijeteung Riame of Impoi village on Saturday afternoon. A 32-year-old man named Ramsamingbe Newme sustained serious injuries in the same wreck and remains hospitalized in Haflong.

The investigation has widened significantly with the arrest of five suspects, including the alleged mastermind Selim Uddin. Authorities describe Uddin as a wholesale drug dealer running a criminal network out of Juria. Police also took four others into custody: Uddin's brother Mohidul Islam, his father Abdul Kuddus Farazi, and associates Muffazzol Islam and Ruksana Khatun, also known as Pinki.

While investigators initially treated the death as a standard road accident, new evidence suggests the officer may have been deliberately targeted to bypass police action. Authorities are digging into whether the operation in Juria was the primary driver behind the fatal strike.

Investigators identified the five suspects in custody as Selim Uddin, his brother Mohidul Islam, his father Abdul Kuddus Farazi, and associates Muffazzol Islam of the Boriguri area and Ruksana Khatun, also known as Pinki, of Kadamoni Pathar. Police suspect Uddin ran a wholesale narcotics operation out of Juria and are examining whether the officer was intentionally struck to prevent his team from uncovering the criminal network.
