Kohima: Over 450 farmers and 100 officials packed the District Library Auditorium in Haflong, Dima Hasao, on September 3, 2026. They marked the 4th Mithun Day under the banner, Celebrating the Pride of the Hills. The ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun organized the event alongside ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute and the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council.
Assam minister Nilima Devi led the event as chief guest. Guests of honor included Debolal Gorlosa and Gabriel Denwang Wangsu. Experts and dignitaries, including Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, Dr. K.M. Bujarbaruah, Dr. Niranjan Kalita, Dr. Girish Patil S., Rupali Langthasa, and Manjit Niding, joined the proceedings. Leaders pledged full administrative support to expand mithun farming in the region.
Dr. Girish Patil S. presented a roadmap for the sector. He addressed current prospects and challenges. Participants zeroed in on Foot and Mouth Disease as a primary threat. They demanded better vaccination coverage and disease surveillance. Experts also pushed for improved fodder management and expanded fencing to protect herds.
The event included a roundtable discussion on development strategies for Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland. Speakers noted the success of semi-intensive farming in Nagaland. They linked conservation efforts to income growth. One presenter noted that the event focused on, "scientific mithun production for enhancing farmers’ income."
Technical sessions covered piggery, dairy farming, and disease prevention. The day ended with a direct interaction between scientists and farmers. Officials pushed for closer ties between research institutions and local government to secure the future of the industry.
