Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Minister Gabriel D Wangsu is demanding better support for Mithun rearing across the Northeast. He pushed for stronger policy work and more awareness regarding Foot and Mouth Disease at a meeting in Haflong, Assam. Farmers need scientific fencing to keep livestock operations sustainable and profitable. Experts want to fix market access and improve how tribes manage their animals.
Wangsu spoke to a room full of officials in Dima Hasao. He reminded the group that the animal represents more than just food or money for the region. "Mithun is not just livestock, it is an integral part of the culture, identity and livelihoods of our hill communities. Strengthening this sector remains a shared responsibility and a common priority," Wangsu said.
The meeting included Assam Minister Nilima Devi, Dima Hasao Chief Executive Member Debolal Gorlosa, and ICAR Deputy Director General Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta. Researchers like Dr. K M Bujarbaruah and Dr. Niranjan Kalita also joined the talk. They finished the day at the 4th Mithun Day celebration.
The ICAR-National Research Centre on Mithun in Nagaland organized the event alongside the ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute and local Dima Hasao officials. Delegations from Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Meghalaya attended the festivities. They committed to scientific management of the sector to lift income levels for local tribal farmers.
