Guwahati: Dibrugarh traders are hitting back at the municipal board. They claim the city's anti-encroachment drive targets poor street vendors while giving a pass to the rich. Enforcement teams are using bulldozers to clear roadside stalls. They destroy or seize goods from people selling basic items like fruits and vegetables. Witnesses even saw officials confiscate balloons from a child.
Big businesses are getting a free ride. Shops in Marwari Patti stack sacks of potatoes and salt on public footpaths. Some have even installed permanent iron railings without permission. It blocks pedestrians entirely. Meanwhile, shops in Jalukpara use public roads as private motorcycle garages. The civic administration remains silent on these violations.
Trader groups called out the double standard. They say the board ignores powerful figures while crushing the vulnerable. As one group stated, "The bulldozer is used against poor vendors fighting for two meals a day, while encroachments by influential traders go unchecked."
These organizations demand uniform action against all illegal activity. They warn that the town will not accept such bias. The Dibrugarh Municipal Board has not responded to the claims yet.
