Guwahati: Marwari Hindi High School in Dibrugarh is a mess. All Assam Students' Union members and a media team found rotting, foul-smelling food on-site during a recent inspection. School officials claim they stopped serving mid-day meals years ago. This explanation does not account for why spoiled supplies remained stored on the premises.
Chaos runs deeper than the kitchen. The school is currently paralyzed by a dispute involving two headmasters. The management committee sidelined government-appointed headmistress Rajani Sharma and installed mathematics teacher Ram Niraj Singh in her place. Students report that Singh has not taught regular classes for nearly two years. The school sits near the office of the school inspector, yet conditions continue to decline.
Classrooms lack working ceiling fans and adequate drinking water. Parents and teachers are fed up. They believe committee president Nirmal Beria and secretary Mahabir Bagodia intend to shutter the public institution to open a private school. AASU is now pushing for an urgent investigation into the administration and facility maintenance. "The latest findings have prompted calls for the education department to investigate the condition and storage of the food items, clarify the status of the mid-day meal programme and examine the broader administrative disputes at the school."
