Guwahati: Dibrugarh district administration leveled illegal structures at the historic Ganesh Temple on Thursday, August 6. The site sits off National Highway 37 at Naliapul. Authorities arrived with a large crew to clear the land. Executive Magistrate Samujjal Bora and municipal official Nobhas Das oversaw the operation.
The temple priest claims 18 people grabbed slices of the 13-bigha plot over several years. They built permanent homes on the ground. The property has roots in the British era. Rai Bahadur Jahaj Ram Ram Das donated the land to a Naga ascetic from Kashi to spread Sanatan Dharma. The temple sprang up soon after.
Officials spared properties protected by current court stay orders. These legal battles grind on. The priest wants the land returned to public use. He stated, "The temple land should be preserved exclusively for religious and community purposes." Future plans include building a Sanskriti Tol cultural center and a spiritual complex.
