COTU Demands Action Over Manipur Blockade Violence

Imphal: The Committee on Tribal Unity in Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi, blasted the persistent attacks and harassment of non-tribal residents in Manipur. COTU claims these acts happen under the cover of an ongoing inter-district economic blockade. The group released a statement on July 25 highlighting a video showing an assault at Namdulong.

Extortion is rampant. The blockade hits Gorkhas, Bihari settlers, and other civilians hard. COTU argues the movement serves political ends instead of justice. They point to the prior arrest of suspects in the killing of six people as proof the blockade should have ended. The group remains firm in its stance. "The blockade has continued, describing it as a politically motivated exercise rather than a genuine campaign for justice."

Violence has left deep scars. Three church leaders and 15 Kuki-Zo community members died during the conflict. COTU reports that villages in Noney, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, and Kamjong districts suffered desecration. The organization demands the Indian government stop its current appeasement policy toward the blockade organizers.

Tensions are rising. COTU also wants the Centre to review NSCN activities tied to the ceasefire agreement. They fear that silence from officials will destabilize the entire northeast region. The Information and Publicity wing of the organization issued these demands to both the state and central governments.
