Congress Leader Calls for Probe into Nazira Flood Relief Failures

Guwahati: Debabrata Saikia wants answers. The former Leader of the Opposition and ex-Nazira MLA formally requested that the Sivasagar district administration investigate claims of bias in flood relief. He wrote to the Deputy Commissioner after receiving reports that aid workers bypassed genuine victims.

Families in Ward No. 6 of Nazira town and the Bihubor Gaon Panchayat went days without shelter. Many did not receive vital tarpaulins, baby food, candles, oil, or salt. Saikia noted that some residents were denied Gratuitous Relief just because they are not voters. This practice is cruel. He maintains that government assistance must reach all households regardless of status.

Public health is crashing. The Public Health Engineering Department failed to deliver chlorine tablets or set up sanitation near roadside camps. This neglect invites water-borne diseases. Saikia demanded that officials deploy mobile medical units to every affected panchayat and bring in extra teams from neighboring districts if necessary. He also pushed for temporary toilets to be built immediately.

The administration must punish anyone using relief as a political tool. Saikia expects a quick fix for the people left in the cold. "I expect the district administration to take swift, transparent, and compassionate corrective action to alleviate the suffering of the people of Nazira," he said. The district needs to follow the official relief manual to ensure no family is left behind again.
