Debabrata Saikia slams Assam government over flood relief failures

Guwahati: Former Assam Legislative Assembly opposition leader Debabrata Saikia slammed the state government for its response to the current flood crisis. Thousands face misery. Displaced residents remain stranded on roadsides without proper shelter. Saikia toured flood-hit areas stretching from Garmur to Chengdhara village in the Nazira constituency early Tuesday, August 4.

Constant rain overnight ruined what little protection families had. People struggle to shield their children and livestock under makeshift tents built from tin, bamboo, tarpaulins, and bed sheets. These families cook and sleep in these cramped, wet spaces. Saikia distributed one tarpaulin each to 100 families, hoping to ease their burden.

"The incessant rain throughout the night has made the condition of flood-affected people taking shelter on roadsides even more miserable," Saikia said. He accused the district administration of total inaction despite constant warnings. He claims the state failed to set up enough relief camps or supply basic gear.

Saikia demanded the government act immediately. He wants officials to provide sufficient supplies and shelter to these families until they can move back home. The situation remains dire for those living along the roads.
