Aizawl: Mizoram landed a Rs 120 crore payout from the Centre to overhaul its healthcare system. Chief Minister Lalduhoma confirmed the funding on July 27 during a visit to Zoram Medical College and Hospital near Aizawl. The cash comes from the Financial Assistance to States/UTs for Public Health Infrastructure scheme, which has a national budget of Rs 4,200 crore for the 2026-27 financial year.
The state scored big on performance indicators. Mizoram cut its infant mortality rate from 13 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2023 to 12 in 2024, netting a Rs 20 crore bonus. Another Rs 100 crore followed after the state spiked its National Quality Assurance Standards certified facilities by 21.07 percent between 2024-25 and 2025-26. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare approved the project plan, with the Ministry of Finance expected to greenlight fund releases by the end of July.
Lalduhoma outlined the spending plan for the influx of capital. The state will drop Rs 83.57 crore to convert four Community Health Centres into First Referral Units, specifically targeting facilities in Sakawrdai, Kawrthah, West Phaileng, and Bungtlang South. Infectious disease wards are slated for Lunglei District Hospital, Lawngtlai District Hospital, and Kulikawn Sub-District Hospital, costing Rs 14.03 crore. Kulikawn will also house a new Tuberculosis Treatment Unit. Another Rs 22.39 crore will go toward specialized equipment for tuberculosis testing and mother-child care.
The Chief Minister praised his administration for the results. He stated, "Lalduhoma described the performance-based incentives as recognition of Mizoram's progress in implementing public health initiatives." He credited Health Minister Lalrinpuii and the Health and Family Welfare Department for their work. Before leaving, he checked in on the 519-bed Zoram Medical College and Hospital.
