Guwahati: The Assam government confirmed that the Central Bureau of Investigation is handling the murder case of former All Bodoland Minority Students Union president Lafiqul Islam Ahmed. Officials addressed the State Assembly on July 27 regarding the ongoing inquiry.
Ahmed died after gunmen shot him on August 1, 2017. The attack occurred within the jurisdiction of the Kokrajhar Police Station. He died at a hospital shortly after the shooting. Authorities initially opened Kokrajhar PS Case No. 492/2017 under the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. An Additional Superintendent of Police first ran the probe. The state Director General of Police then ordered a Special Investigation Team led by IGP Anurag Tankha to take over. This team arrested six suspects.
The Assam Home and Political Department transferred the file to the CBI on August 4, 2017. The SIT handed over all case records to federal agents on November 13, 2017. The CBI filed a chargesheet against eight people on November 21, 2021. The filing occurred before the Special Judicial Magistrate in Kamrup (Metro).
Three other suspects remain at large. The government declared them proclaimed offenders and issued standing warrants for their arrest on February 10, 2023. The matter is currently pending trial before the Special CBI Court. When questioned by MLA Ashraful Hussain about the status, the Home Department stated that the case is "currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation."
