Student Union Protests CBI Failure in 2017 Murder Case

Guwahati: The All BTC Minorities Students’ Union marched through five districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region on Tuesday. Protesters filled streets in Gossaigaon, Bhotgaon, Dwarkuchi, Mushalpur, Rowta, and Kajalgaon. They want the Central Bureau of Investigation to finish the job. The union claims the agency failed to execute standing warrants for three missing suspects in the 2017 killing of Lafiqul Islam Ahmed.

Ahmed died on August 1, 2017, after unknown gunmen shot him in Titaguri. The CBI eventually took over the case. They named Rupa Brahma, also known as Kejeng or Ramesh Brahma, alongside Dingkur Mushahary and Bhadreswar Basumatary as the primary suspects. The agency filed a chargesheet, but the union remains furious that some suspects are still free and others walked on bail.

ABMSU president Taison Hussain led the rally. He hammered the investigation for its sluggish pace and potential political ties. Taison Hussain stated, "Justice would remain incomplete until all the accused are brought before the court." The organization promised to escalate their demonstrations if the CBI does not nab the fugitives and move the trial forward soon.
