Guwahati: Three murder suspects surrendered before a CBI court in Guwahati on Saturday, ending an eight-year evasion of justice. Rupa Brahma, Bhadreswar Basumatary, and Dinku Mushahary were named as prime accused in the 2017 killing of former All BTC Minority Students Union president Laffiqul Islam. The CBI previously placed a bounty of 2 lakh rupees on each man.
Laffiqul Islam died after gunmen shot him at Titaguri in Kokrajhar town on September 1, 2017. The brazen attack triggered massive protests across the Bodoland region. A Special Investigation Team of the Assam Police handled the initial probe before handing the case over to the federal agency.
The family of the slain leader remains dissatisfied with the pace of the legal process. Mobibul Islam, the brother of the deceased, questioned why the accused remained free for nearly a decade. He told reporters, "It is extremely unfortunate that even after the CBI took over the investigation, the accused could not be arrested for eight years. Their surrender after such a long period is a matter of concern."
The family now demands that the CBI move beyond the surrender and conduct a full inquiry. They want the agency to confirm if any political figures or influential individuals ordered the execution. Investigators must now secure the three men to determine the motive behind the killing and identify every person involved in the conspiracy.
