CBI Charges Retired Railway Engineer Over Illicit Wealth

Guwahati: The Guwahati branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation charged retired Northeast Frontier Railway Deputy Chief Engineer Sajal Kanti Das with corruption. He allegedly stacked up assets far beyond his legal income. The case covers a six-year window ending in 2022. Officials claim Das and his wife, Sangita Das, grew their wealth from Rs 39.85 lakh to Rs 1,28,66,946 during that time. That is an unexplained gain of Rs 88.20 lakh.

Investigators zeroed in on properties across Cachar district. This includes a house on five kathas of land in Rangpur worth Rs 19 lakh. Sangita Das allegedly holds major land parcels in Udharbond and Lakhipur. She also owns a commercial site on Club Road in Silchar valued at Rs 34 lakh. Her husband holds a separate flat on the same road worth more than Rs 20 lakh. The agency states, "The case relates to allegations of disproportionate assets, and the properties and financial holdings are subject to investigation and verification by the agency."

Paper trails tell a story. The CBI found multiple bank accounts plus fixed and term deposits under the couple's names. These holdings contain several lakhs of rupees. Das previously worked as a deputy chief engineer for the NFR based in Jiribam. Investigators are now verifying the full scope of these financial holdings.
